Free tyre checks for horseboxes in Bolton

HORSE owners in the Bolton area are this month (March, 2012) invited to a leading tyre specialist in the town to have the tyres on their horseboxes or trailers checked for free.

People are being offered the complimentary check by Bolton Thistlethwaites Tyres, which is located on Burns Street, to ensure their tyres are safe and roadworthy.

Jamie Cole, Manager of Bolton Thistlethwaites Tyres, which is part of the Protyre Group, said: “During the spring many horseboxes and trailers will make their first trip after being stored away for the winter. Not all people are aware that tyres can deteriorate when left unused for extended periods of time.

“Also because some trailers and horseboxes are only used occasionally, often for limited miles, they remain on the vehicle for longer. This can be a problem as tyres become time expired after seven years. We suggest to customers tyres older than seven years should be considered for replacement, even if they appear to have adequate tread depth.

“The reason for this is that tyres will deteriorate over time and the chemicals that keep a tyre in good condition can leech out and they are also susceptible to ozone degradation.”

Bolton Thistlethwaites Tyres is offering a free spring tyre check for horseboxes and trailers, which will include a check on the age of tyres.

Jamie added: “Owners of horseboxes and trailers can undertake a series of simple checks themselves to check the condition of their tyres. We suggest people carefully examine tyres to ensure that there are no cuts, lumps or bulges and that the sidewalls are not affected by cracking or distortion through being left standing for an extended period.

“Tyres must also have a minimum of 1.6 millimetres (mm) of tread, although we recommend that tyres with less than 2.5mm of tread should be considered for replacement.

“Tyre pressures are equally crucial to the safety, stability and economical running of a horsebox or trailer. Under or over inflated tyres can not only affect the handling, but can at the extreme result in a tyre failure. They will also wear more quickly and use more fuel thereby creating more CO2 emissions.”

So you think showing isn't for you? Well we're determined to prove you wrong. Join the team at Leigh and District Horse and Pony Club—where there is something for everyone.

I’ve never done it before. Horseowners of all abilities are welcome at Leigh and District. Younger riders who are not as confident can try lead rein classes, first year first ridden or capabil-ity ridden. Older riders who are new to showing can try our novice classes.

My horse isn’t a registered breed. We have classes for every type of horse, from mini cobs and veterans to retired racehorses. Why not try a riding club horse or pony class where your horse will pop a small fence, or family pony if you have that rarest of creatures, a true all-rounder. Equitation classes are open to all breeds and our showjumping starts at 40cm.

I prefer dressage. We have an open style and per-formance class which would be perfect for those aspiring to wear top hat and tails. The show in-cludes a three or four loop serpentine, lengthened trot and extended canter across the diagonal. We also have both in hand and ridden classes for sport/competition/dressage horses.

My child just can’t stay clean for long enough to make it into the ring. That’s why we have the Thelwell pony and rider class!

Taking the fear out of fireworks

Bonfire night is drawing near, and it's a worrying time for all horse owners.

Fireworks can frighten even the most sensible horse, so to help the British Horse Society (BHS) has issued the following advice for owners:

Fireworks must not be set off near livestock or horses in fields or stables

It is best to keep your horse in its normal routine

Risk assess your stable yard and plan to limit disturbance

Ensure you find out if there are any displays planned nearby

Warn local organisers, councils and schools that there are horses in the area

Organise your plans in advance

Remain calm and positive yourself as horses will sense your unease

Keep your horse in a familiar environment

Safety for everyone is the key – do not put yourself in danger

The BHS also supports the Blue Cross guidelines on Fireworks and Animals which is available at bluecross.org.uk and in paper format from both the Blue Cross and the BHS.

It is not just horse owners who need to be careful. People organising firework displays should inform local horse owners and it is also a good idea not to let off fireworks anywhere near fields or farms. Most people don’t realise how much suffering fireworks cause animals, particularly horses. Those who really want to have fireworks in their back garden should think carefully about how it will affect local pets and animals before they do so.

By being proactive in planning for fireworks and Bonfire Night, you can make the annual celebrations less stressful for you and your horse.

Share your shame!

So we will hopefully have lots of people trying their have at dressage for the first time on Sunday (as well as some more experienced ones doing our TWO novice classes) and I thought it would be nice to give them some moral support by sharing our most embarrassing dressage memories.

Personally, mine is probably when my hunter, Meg, lost her brakes in medium canter across a diagonal and ended up several metres outside the arena, but even that can't beat an unfortunate friend of mine who got caught in a sudden downpour... and found her freshly applied fake tan transferred quite dramatically onto her breeches.

Sad news as the horse world loses a legend

Tragic news today from the Eilbergs whose fabulous Grand Prix horse Two Sox has been put down less than two weeks after retiring. Two Sox didn't miss a national championship in 10 years, and was national champion in 2008 with Maria.

The news was broken, as far as we know, on www.horsehero.com, who had the following statement from Maria's mother, Geri:

"Such sad news: Barely two weeks into retirement, Two Sox, our beloved Ed, shattered his pastern while grazing and was put down yesterday. It is a complete mystery how this happened as he appeared to be settling perfectly into his new routine of hacking and turnout. The paddock was small, level and in view of our outdoor arena so we could keep an eye on him and he seemed perfectly relaxed in the october sunshine. We are all devastated it is like losing a member of the family, he was such a special horse, one of the best. it's been a terrible shock, especially for Maria. Geri Eilberg."

With just over a week to go until the first competition of our winter dressage, we know that many of you have been working hard to make sure your horses are fit enough for competition - but what about yourselves? It takes a lot of work just to "sit there looking pretty", so to help we've found a helpful article about lengthening your leg from the fab American magazine Dressage Today. Some good news from across the pond

We do like a bit of good news here in the Leigh and District camp, and we were particularly worried about the horses caught up in Hurricane Irene as it swept across America. However, we've just received this rather sweet story from North Carolina:

"The 116 wild Shackleford horses, 400-year residents of North Carolina’s Southern Outer Banks, weathered another storm. Immediately following Hurricane Irene, a new foal was born only hours after 90+ miles per hour winds struck Shackleford Banks, the horses’ permanent home. Appropriately named “Aftermath,” the new born foal is perfectly healthy, serving as a testament of the fortitude of the wild Spanish Mustangs.

"At the southern end of Core Sound, a valuable part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore, lies a gem of an island known as Shackleford Banks. The only permanent residents on this nine-mile long island are Spanish Mustangs, locally known as "Banker ponies." The majestic horses, survivors of Spanish galleon shipwrecks, have roamed freely across the miles of pristine beaches for more than 400 years. Visitors make their way to the island by private boat or on one of the ferries running from Harkers Island, Beaufort and Morehead City."

Championship news and dressage is back!

Hello all!

Sorry it's been so long, it's been incredibly busy over at L&D towers. However we're thrilled to report that last weekend we won the Osbaldeston Classics showing championships by a whopping 60 point margin. We're really pleased and would like to thanks everyone that came along and represented us. This weekend is the team showjumping event, so let's hope we can dominate that, too!

In other news, Leigh and District's winter dressage series has returned for its third year, giving horse owners in the North West the chance to brush up their dressage skills from next month riding their tests in the shelter of our indoor school.
Once again, we're offering separate classes for beginner riders and green horses aged six and under, plus a choice of two prelim and two novice tests.
For those who become dressage members there is the chance to compete for an end-of-season trophy, while the test schedule has been co-ordinated to help horses and riders improve over the course of the season.
Leigh and District's dressage committee pride themselves on being the friendliest in the area and are always happy to answer questions from newbies and provide advice on everything from tack and togs to how to interpret the judge's comments.
The first competition will take place on Sunday, October 9th, at Landlords Farm Equestrian Centre, on Dicconson Lane in Aspull, Lancashire.

I know quite a few of you attended our TARRA (Thoroughbred and Retrained Racehorse Association) qualifiers at the July show, so you might be interested in the news that British Dressage have teamed up with Retraining of Racehorses to run a racehorse to riding horse dressage championship. Ever wondered who those wild-eyed purple-clad folks you see in the cabin are? Here's a quick rundown of a few of those faces... more snaps to follow from next show!

Our leader, Ann. Currently suffering fron laryngitis, so it's lovely and quiet.

Barbara "Granny B" Dibbits. If a job needs doing, Granny B'll make sure it gets done.

Field manager Darren "Tea two" Gowland. He's a Geordie, so we can provide a translator if you don't quite understand where he's telling you to park.

Treasurer Liz "Mother" Mottershead. Adding some much-needed glamour to proceedings.

Chief hooter boy Rob Penny. Never knowlingly overworked.... (Sorry Rob!)

Of course, we also have a little help of the four-legged kind who are always happy to play with new volunteers, and occasionally drag a rope across the field as they "assist" with setting up...

Where on earth has the season gone? It doesn't seem like five minutes since we were worrying over whether the fields would be dry enough for the first show - and now it's May bank holiday!

Don't forget, this weekend's show will be your last chance to qualify with us for the Ponies (UK) sumemr champs, and is also a BSPS championship qualifier and area 2a points show. I've been looking round the websites of other clubs recently and I believe that we offer the widest selection of qualifiers anywhere in the North West - although if you know of one we've missed then let us know!

Still to come are more Equifest and UK Showing qualifiers, CHAPS, TARRA (for retired racehorses), plus more opportunities to qualify for the North West showjumping and working hunter championships before Ponies (UK) winter qualifiers at the end of summer.

Sunday's show will also have a working hunter ring, with clear round until 11am. For logistical reasons the working hunter is NOT on the main show field - unlike some shows we don't believe it's fair to ask 15 section Ds to gallop round a 20 by 20 ring! If you cross out of the show field by the bottom gate and go across the flat field (spare car parking) you will come to our beautiful, professionally built workers course. It jumped really well at the show at the beginning of the month, so we hope you will come and give it a go.

Dressage points champions

Congratulations to all the competitors who took part in our winter dressage series.
Holly Watson took the beginners junior champion title with her very cute little pony Carrwood Goldleaf, and Karen Calderbank took the senior beginners title on her pony Gigman Sandypipit, who was originally bought for Karen's daughter Abbey, but commandeered by mum!
There were double winners in both the junior and senior prelim and novice sections. Abi Lilley won both titles with her pony Euphoria Queen. Abi says she will be trying her hand at elementary level next year.
Debbie Dobson won the senior prelim and novice sections on her "gentle giant", the part-bred Shire My Gentleman. Look out for Debbie and "Sheldon" as he is known at home in our new heavy horse showing classes, which we have introduced this year.
The open elementary champion was Jackie Fare on her chestnut gelding Oskar. Jackie had to ride some particularly difficult tests to win this season, including the fiendish elementary 49 - sorry Jackie!
Special mention also goes to Savannah McMullen, who was our most improved junior rider, and Karen Calderbank who was our most improved senior. And Abi Lilley won the highest score award for getting a massive 72% in the prelim 13.
It was also great to see some veteran horses showing the youngsters how it's done as they competed for the qualifying spots for this year's Veteran Horse Society dressage championships. Congratulations to everyone who got through - they now go on to the regional finals, where they will be battling for the chance to go to the VHS dressage national championships! The dressage gala day on July 3rd will also be a VHS qualifier, so if you missed out this time make sure you enter in time - and hope for sunshine as we will be venturing out of the indoor arena.

**** February results ****

After the postponement of the January dressage competition due to the heavy snowfall, we were thrilled to see that competitors braved the cold for Leigh's February dressage competition.

Karen Calderbank won the senior beginners' class on her pony, Gigman Sandypipit, while Holly Watson took junior honours on Carrwood Goldleaf.

The open prelim class was won by Debbie Dobson on her shire cross, My Gentleman. Abi Lilley and Euphoria Queen won both the junior prelim and novice classes. The elementary winner was Jackie Fare on Oskar.

Katie Hodson won the prix caprilli (dressage with jumping) on her Connemara pony, A Bouncing Star.

**** March dressage ****

The final dressage competition of the winter series will take place on March 20. The classes will be beginners prelim 4, open prelim 13, novice 30 and elementary 49. The competition will be a qualifier for the Veteran Horse Society dressage championships - currently the only qualifier for the champs in this region.

**** Dressage Gala Day ****

The dressage committee have just announced that they will be holding a Dressage Gala Day on July 3rd.

Riders will have the chance to improve their dressage scores in clinics with British Dressage listed judge Jenny Johnson, followed by classes in the afternoon including lead rein, young horse, beginners and prix caprilli, plus prelim, novice and elementary classes.

The day will also have qualifiers for the Veteran Horse Society dressage championships and the UK Riders dressage championships.

Winter Dressage - February 13th

Yep, after some snow-induced confusion we are back with the second to last of our Winter Dressage series. December's tests have now become February's tests to keep the increase in difficulty as gentle as possible.

Tests are:

BEGINNERS: Prelim 1

OPEN: Prelim 10, Novice 25, Elementary 49

PLUS! Prix Caprilli 2 (dressage with jumping)

There are several Prix Caprilli tests floating around on the internet. The CORRECT Prix Caprilli 2 is available to download and print off from the Leigh and District website.More details and entry forms are available from http://www.leighanddistrict.co.uk.

Deadline for entries is Wednesday, February 10th. Please ring between 8 and 10pm on Friday, February 12th for times.

We are also thinking about holding adressage day in July with qualifiers for VHS dressage and possibly the Fearns Farm Dressage Championships, plus two dressage clinics and potentially a chance to try your hand at medium level. If you like the idea of this and it could potentially be something you would be interested in, or you have any other ideas of what you would like to see included in a dressage day, please message me or email leighanddistrict@yahoo.co.uk.

We are also now taking entries for the next dressage competition on February 13. Again, you can find more details from the Leigh and District website. It's a great chance to come and try your hand at dressage, and we have classes for everyone, from beginners to elementary.

For the March competition and the dressage day in July (details yet to be announced) I am considering holding a VHS dressage champs qualifier if enough people are interested. Please comment below to let me know your thoughts.

I am also thinking of organising two one-hour clinics at the July event if there is enough interest - again, comments below please!

Important notice - dressage cancelled

IMPORTANT NOTICE - DRESSAGE CANCELLED

Due to the frozen and icy conditions we have decided to cancel the dressage on Saturday, January 9.

An extra dressage competition will be held on Saturday, March 20.

This means there will be some changes to next month's tests

2010 tests will now be:

FEBRUARY: Beginners: Prelim 1, Op...en: Prelim 10, Novice 25, Elementary 49, Prix Caprilli 2

Meanwhile, I know one of the things I often see on my score sheet is "could be more supple". Meggie is 18 years old - but that's no excuse for me not to have her bending softly round my leg!
